A former Upstate high school athletic director has had his educator certificate suspended after he was accused of having a sexual relationship with a staff member on district property, according to the South Carolina State Board of Education.
WYFF News 4 first reported in October 2019 that Berea High athletic director and basketball coach Jeff Maness resigned from Greenville County Schools citing personal reasons.
At the time the Greenville County School District released a statement that said the following:
"GCS is conducting an audit of financial records related to athletic and pupil activity funds to ensure funds were not misappropriated. The audit was prompted by evidence that Maness was not in full compliance with all the financial protocols required by the district."
On Tuesday, Maness’ educator certificate was suspended for one year, commencing on Dec. 8, 2020, and ending on Dec. 7, 2021, according to a consent order of suspension from the state board.
The consent order said on Oct. 7, 2019, Maness was placed on administrative leave following the allegations of a sexual relationship with a staff member on district property.
The inappropriate relationship involved meetings in the football stadium concession stand, his office, and a dressing room, according to the consent order.
On Oct. 14, 2019, Maness resigned his employment with the District, effective Nov. 1, 2019, the consent order said.
The state board said Maness did agree to waive his right to a hearing on this matter.
“The State Board finds that the evidence presented demonstrates that Mr. Maness engaged in unprofessional conduct by engaging in a sexual relationship with a staff member on District property,” the consent order of suspension.
The consent order did not mention the audit of financial records.
