The 40-and-over 4.0 USTA women's tennis team from Wentworth By The Sea Country Club — “Sets on the Beach” — advanced to the playoff round of the USTA New England Sectional Championships last week.

The team’s local league season ran from April 30 to July 2, and it finished first in its flight (7-2) against teams from the Great Bay Athletic Club, Seacoast Tennis Club and York Golf & Tennis.

The team is coached by Kevin Christian, the head professional at Wentworth By The Sea, and team captains are Susan Johnson and Kelly McDevitt. Other members are Jacqueline Bryan, Carol Welsh, Tania Marino, Mary Pappas, Allison Bitter, Danielle Ades, Elizabeth Robinson, Jeannine Zeller, Carla Breton, Ann Lynch, Sharon Weston, Eileen Eberhart, Danielle Megliola, Melissa Rigazio and Marla Katz.

Indians blast Yankees, 8-4

NEW YORK (AP) — Mike Clevinger struck out 10 in five shutout innings, Mike Freeman had three extra-base hits and the Cleveland Indians tamed the New York Yankees, 8-4, for a four-game split between AL pennant contenders.

A day after manager Aaron Boone and two other Yankees were ejected for again ranting against umpires, it was a relatively quiet afternoon. Miffed by a strike three call against rookie Mike Ford, Boone merely threw his hands up and walked down the dugout steps without saying a word.

Freeman hit a three-run homer and a pair of doubles. Oscar Mercado homered and drove in three runs and Francisco Lindor also connected for Cleveland.

Clevinger (8-2), who won his seventh straight decision, limited New York to three hits and walked two.

Lightning hits Mickelson’s hotel

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) — Phil Mickelson had a wild Sunday, and that was before he showed up for the BMW Championship.

Mickelson said on Twitter that lightning struck the hotel where he was staying, leading to an evacuation. One problem: He was staying on the top floor, his clubs were in his room and his tee time at Medinah was approaching.

Mickelson eventually got to the course in time to change shoes in the parking lot, but not after a tweet saying that his clubs served as a fire retardant. He headed to the range to warm up, pausing only to answer the phone when his wife called to check on him.

Storms have caused the final round to be pushed back and started from both tees.

Tennis: Keys, Medvedev win

MASON, Ohio (AP) — Two unexpected champions embraced their first Rookwood championship trophies, concluding a week that brought more questions than clarity to the upcoming U.S. Open.

Who's going to be healthy on the women's side? Will stumbles in the men's bracket at the Western & Southern Open carry over to New York?

And are Madison Keys and Daniil Medvedev capable of carrying their newfound momentum into a Grand Slam event? After winning the biggest tournament title of their careers, they were already getting asked about how it might transfer to the bigger stage.

Keys rallied late in both sets and beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5, 7-6 (5) Sunday for her second title of the season and easily the biggest of her career.

The men’s bracket in Cincinnati was billed as a reunion of the Big Four — Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray back together for the first time since January. None of them made it to the final.

"To finally lift the trophy this week is an amazing feeling," Medvedev said.
