Virden’s Braeden Lewis drove in Strathclair’s Conor Geekie for the winning run as Manitoba edged Saskatchewan 6-5 in boys’ baseball at the Western Canada Games on Friday in Swift Current, Sask.

The run gave Manitoba a 6-4 lead through five innings, and Saskatchewan was only able to plate one run in the seventh.

Souris’s Avery Kirkup and Russell’s Wyatt Tweet did not play.

Manitoba (4-1) was still on the field against Alberta (3-2) in the final preliminary game at press time, though both are through to a rematch for the gold medal today at 1 p.m.

Kola’s Maddie Lesnar and the Manitoba girls’ volleyball team suffered their first loss of the week, falling 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-23) to Alberta. Lesnar started the third set.

Lesnar played the entire match as Manitoba (4-1) earned a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-18) sweep over Yukon (1-4) in the evening.

Manitoba plays Saskatchwan in the semifinals this afternoon.

It was the same story for the Manitoba boys as Alberta swept their match 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-21. Dauphin’s JJ Love started the first two sets, and Brandon’s Colby Carmichael did not enter the match.

Manitoba (4-1) rebounded to beat the Northwest Territories 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-22) as Love and Carmichael both played two sets.

Manitoba is through to the semifinals, but its opponent was not determined at press time.

Killarney’s Cala Korman fired a 14-over 86 in the first round of the girls’ golf event to go sit in seventh place in the three-round event.

At the track, Brandon’s Kenyi Kubari did not start in the men’s high jump, which fellow Manitoban Nathan Smith won gold in by clearing the bar at 2.05 metres.
