Soccer season kicks off under the lights

HANOVERTON — Salem’s girls soccer team was on the ball on Friday.

The Quakers got goals from Clara Double and Abby Perry to down United 2-1 in a Friday Night Futbol opener at United Local High School.

Hanna Gaither assisted on the first goal. Sam Moore had three saves in goal for the Quakers. Salem is at Niles on Monday.

Morgan Briceland scored for the Eagles. Madelynne Brieck had 10 saves in goal.

United is at Columbiana on Monday.

United 4, Salem 1

HANOVERTON — United’s boys soccer team booted Salem by a 4-1 count to kick off the season on Friday.

Scoring for the Eagles were Ethan Stout, Tyler Blake, Zach Jewell, and Kade Blake. Contributing assists for the Eagles were Tyler Blake, Jewell and Jaret Hahn with one apiece.

United hosts Columbiana on Monday night.

Hunter Griffith scored Salem’s lone goal on a header. Jacob McLachlin had the assist off a free kick.

Tommy Goodchild had eight saves in goal for the Quakers.

Salem hosts Ursuline on Wednesday.

Beaver Local 4,

East Liverpool 1

EAST LIVERPOOL — Beaver Local’s girls soccer team was dialed in on Friday as the Beavers scored three times in the first half to dump East Liverpool 4-1 in a Friday Night Futbol opener at Patterson Field.

Riley Britt opened the scoring with a goal at 14:52 of the first half. She was assisted by MaitLynn Buck.

Chansyn Hoppel scored the second goal at 17:40, while Madison Cline added the third of the half on an assist from Jensen Britt.

Hoppel tallied again on an assist from Riley Britt at the start of the second half.

East Liverpool’s Selena Rogers scored midway through the second half and the Potters held the Beavers scoreless the rest of the way.

Hailey Russell had two saves in goal for the Potters.

Beaver Local is at Harrison Central on Tuesday. The game is at 5 p.m.

East Liverpool 3

EAST LIVERPOOL — Beaver Local and East Liverpool’s boys teams played to a 3-3 tie on Friday night at Patterson Field.

Beaver Local hosts Salem on Aug. 24.

West Branch 9, Crestview 0

BELOIT — West Branch’s girls soccer team knocked off Crestview 9-0 on Friday.

Emma Egli had a hat trick for the Warriors. Jillian Pidgeon and Lacey Phillis had two goals each, while Alli Heffinger and Bri Blevins had a goal each.

Blevins had two assists. Other assists went to Lexi Biery, Pidgeon, Phillis and Makenna Lins.

Taylor Slagle had two saves in goal.

Columbiana 8, Mineral Ridge 2

MINERAL RIDGE — Columbiana’s boys soccer team got a hat trick and one assist from Gabe Heinrich in a 8-2 win over Mineral Ridge on Friday night.

Drake Daughtery had two goals and three assists, while Collin Schick had a goal and two assists. Ashton Kakavros and Frankie Kozma had one goal each. Nate Burnell had 10 saves in goal.

The Clippers are at United on Monday.

West Branch 2, Barberton 1

BARBERTON — Avery Francis and Vito Mattei scored to lead West Branch to a 2-1 win over Barberton on Friday in boys soccer action. Justin Cederbloom and Cole Miller had two assists each for the Warriors.

West Branch is at Poland on Tuesday.
