Western Michigan basketball coach Steve Hawkins' team will square off against Michigan in December.

Michigan and Western Michigan will get plenty familiar with each other this fall.

The schools are scheduled to meet in three marquee sports: Football on Sept. 18 at Michigan Stadium, hockey on Oct. 19 at Yost Ice Arena and Oct. 20 at Lawson Ice Arena, and basketball on Dec. 15 at Crisler Center.

The football meeting will be the seventh all-time between the teams, and first since 2011. That will earn Western Michigan a $1.2-million payout.

As for hockey, it will be Western Michigan's first trip to Ann Arbor since 2012, and Michigan's first trip to Kalamazoo since 2013.

And in basketball, this will be just the teams' second meeting in the John Beilein, and first since 2012. Western Michigan will get a $90,000 payout for that game.

Michigan and Western Michigan also will play in men's soccer in Ann Arbor on Sept. 7. Both teams made the NCAA Tournament last season.

In other notable scheduling news, Detroit Mercy men's basketball will play at California and Temple to open the 2018-19 season, as part of the Legends Classic. The Titans, under new coach Mike Davis, will play at Temple on Friday, Nov. 9, and then at California, on Thursday, Nov. 15.

CMU schedules Mizzou

Central Michigan football continues to be aggressive in its scheduling.

This week, it was announced the Chippewas will play at Missouri, of the SEC, on Sept. 4, 2021. That will earn Central Michigan a $1.4-million payout.

It was previously announced that also in 2021, Sept. 25, Central Michigan will play at LSU. In 2023, Central Michigan will play at national powerhouse Alabama. It will be Central Michigan's first time playing either of the three SEC schools.

"I'll say it again: We welcome the challenge to measure ourselves against the best,” Central Michigan coach John Bonamego said.

“I’ve seen firsthand the passion SEC fans have for football, and it should be a great trip for our players and fans.”

Central Michigan was 8-5 in 2017 and beat a Big 12 opponent (Kansas) for a second consecutive year, after a controversial win over Oklahoma State in 2016.

This season, Central Michigan opens at Kentucky, then hosts Kansas.

UM award winners

Michigan basketball star Katelynn Flaherty and track-and-field national-champion Ben Flanagan were named the university's athletes of the year.

Flaherty, the first women's basketball player to win the award, had a historic season, becoming not just the program's all-time leader in points, but the all-time leading scorer in university history, men's or women's. She passed Glen Rice, and was later honored on the Crisler Center court along with Rice.

Flanagan, also a senior, won the national championship in the 10,000 meters, coming from behind in the final 300 meters to score the upset victory.

Both are eligible to be named Big Ten athletes of the year. Those winners, voted on by media, will be announced later this month.

This and that

►Too bad former Oakland golfer Jake Kneen, of White Lake, wasn't a professional for the Michigan Open. He ended up winning it, but because he still had amateur status, his prize was a $750 gift certificate. The first-prize money, $8,000, ended up going to Howell's James Holley, who finished two shots back.

Kneen, who completed his eligibility at Oakland this spring, is the sixth amateur to win the Michigan Open. He advanced to match play in this week's Michigan Amateur.

►Eastern Michigan sophomore golfer Cougar Collins received a sponsor's exemption into the inaugural Osprey Valley Open, a tournament on the Mackenize Tour (a PGA Tour developmental circuit) in suburban Toronto next month.

►Long-time Detroit Mercy women's golf coach Terri-Anthony Ryan stepped down this week, after leading the program for 13 of its 14 years. She was a three-time Horizon League coach of the year.

►In Michigan State coaching news, Desmond Young has joined the women's basketball team as an assistant coach, and Tamara Duranta as associate head coach of the women's field-hockey team.

►In the women's basketball Big Ten/ACC Challenge next fall, Michigan State hosts Virginia on Nov. 28, and Michigan visits North Carolina State on Nov. 29..
