The Brandon University Bobcats women’s volleyball team only has one Saskatchewanian on its roster this season. Next year, BU will boast two.

Katie Primeau is the first player to commit to Lee Carter’s squad for the 2018-19 campaign and, like first-year setter/libero Alexa Shoults, she is from Saskatoon.

In fact, the five-foot-11 Primeau and Shoults played club volleyball together last season with the Sask Stealth, and the duo have formed a strong relationship.

Shoults played a big role in convincing Primeau to come to the Wheat City.

“Our families are super close and … we’ve grown really close over the past few months, so she really helped in my decision-making,” Primeau said.

The 17-year-old was in contact with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and University of Regina Cougars, but opted to join the Bobcats.

“I had conversations with a couple other universities but right from the start Brandon was kind of where I fit in the best so it was a pretty easy decision for me,” Primeau said.

“I’m very excited, it motivates me so much to work so hard in upcoming seasons and it’s a really exciting opportunity for me,” she continued.

It was while watching Shoults play with the Stealth that Carter first noticed Primeau. From there, the two started having discussions and Carter, who is currently on a one-year sabbatical, likes what he sees in Primeau’s game.

“She’s very bouncy and very dynamic, so she’s everything you want in an outside hitter, and has the ability to get to a ball quick and the ability to get off the ground fast,” Carter said from Sylvan Lake, Alta. “Her athleticism really makes her stand out of the crowd.”

Carter likened Primeau to former Bobcat left side Jaryn Ruether, who finished her playing career in 2011-12.

“I think they are a lot similar players, they are both pretty athletic and have a pretty good arm and understand how to control their body to make the necessary shots or passes,” Carter added.

Primeau knows she has to put in a lot of work to succeed at the next level.

“It’s a faster pace of game at the U Sports level, so that’s something that I really need to work towards is just knowing that it’s way faster there,” Primeau said. “I just have to keep improving my skills all around and making them as solid as I can before I get to BU.”
