MINNEAPOLIS -- Tucker Novotny totaled six strikeouts and Kyle Remington added five more to help lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers past the Nebraska Cornhuskers 6-2 on Sunday.

In addition to his six strikeouts, Novotny (2-5) threw 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits and walking none for Minnesota (21-21, 7-11). Remington's five strikeouts came in addition to his 3.1 shutout innings of work where he allowed one hit without surrendering a walk en route to earning his first career save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gophers got on the board immediately in the first inning after back-to-back doubles by Brady Counsell and Jake Perry. Weber Neels got in on the action by following with an RBI single to score Perry and give the 'U' a 2-0 advantage.

Perry got back to work in the third inning, hitting a solo home run to stretch the lead to 3-0 in favor of Minnesota. Nebraska tallied runs in the fourth and sixth innings to cut into the deficit, but the Gophers answered with a three-run inning in the bottom of the sixth. Ike Mezzenga and Josh Fitzgerald both recorded RBIs on outs before Drew Berkland smashed his second home run of the year to make it 6-2.

After allowing a leadoff single, Remington closed out the game with back-to-back strikeouts, while Weber Neels cut down the runner for a game-ending double play.
