Seenoi-Barr, a Kenyan-born politician for the Social Democratic And Labour Party (SDLP), is set to make history in June as she becomes Northern Ireland’s first black Mayor.

Councillor Lillian Seenoi-Barr, who won the mayoralty of Derry City in Northern Ireland, said the support of local people has overshadowed the online vitriol levelled at her from world famous conspiracy theorists Alex Jones and David Icke, who are using her victory to peddle their own narratives.

Seenoi-Barr, a Kenyan-born politician for the Social Democratic And Labour Party (SDLP), is set to make history in June as she becomes Northern Ireland’s first black Mayor.

However, her historic election has attracted international scorn from incendiary online personalities best known for pushing conspiracy theories.

Profiling the new mayor’s victory in an odd InfoWars segment dedicated to local Northern Irish politics, Jones reportedly misnamed Derry as “Derby” while spreading baseless claims about changes in local mayoral selection processes. Jones was told to pay almost £1.2 billion in compensation in 2022 after claiming the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax.

Meanwhile, Icke, best known for peddling his theory of an elite lizard cabal seeking global control, echoed the protest on X.

Despite the whirlwind of online hate, Seenoi-Barr said she was unphased. Speaking to local outlet Belfast Live, she said: “I am aware of it, but it will not affect me. I am genuinely not interested. People are telling me about it, but I am not interested. I was elected by the people of Foyleside. I topped the poll for the SDLP. That was my public approval. I put my name forward because I knew that I had the public approval.”

She continued: “I’m being stopped everywhere, with people saying congratulations, that they are delighted for us and delighted for the city. That’s what I’m going to focus on.

Local politicians have rallied in support of Seenoi-Barr, including her own party leader Colum Eastwood: “The hate at the heart of their politics could not stand more starkly against the compassion that Lilian has shown for the people of Derry, people across this island and those in need even further afield.”

Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill also weighed in to say that there is “absolutely no place in our society for this abhorrent racist and misogynistic abuse.”
