Meet African Stars FC, Utah’s newest soccer franchise

Meet More soccer is on its way to Utah.

The United Premier Soccer League announced Friday the addition of the African Stars FC. The new team will be based in Salt Lake City and play in the UPSL’s Mountain Conference.

“We are very pleased to welcome African Stars Football Club to the UPSL Mountain Conference,” UPSL national director Matt Khala said in a news release. “Diversity of club ownership is one of the strengths of the UPSL, and to have a club that has come together to represent their heritage is a movement we will always support.”

The move makes the Stars, founded in 2017, the “first nationally-sanctioned African-immigrant owned and operated Pro Development club in Salt Lake City,” per the release. The team has not found a place to play its home games yet, but is finalizing the venue, the release said.

The Stars will start play this spring. The UPSL is a professional development league that operates all over the United States and plans to have more than 400 teams playing in the fall.

UPSL teams are able to play in the qualifying rounds of the U.S. Open Cup due to the league’s affiliation with the U.S. Soccer Federation and the U.S. Adult Soccer Association.
