Hope named OUA all-star

Windsor Lancers forward Kyle Hope of Blenheim was named an OUA West Division men’s hockey second-team all-star Thursday.

Hope led the Lancers with a career-high 28 points in 27 games in his fifth season. He scored a team-high 11 goals and shared the team lead with 17 assists.

He joined the Lancers after playing five seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with Owen Sound and Oshawa.

Hope is now playing for the Fort Wayne Komets in the ECHL. He has five assists in six games.

Ryerson Rams forward Matt Mistele, whose father John is a Chatham native, was named the OUA West most valuable player and a first-team all-star. He’s the OUA scoring champion.

Eagles sweep hoops titles

The McNaughton Avenue Eagles are the Chatham conference champions for senior girls’ and senior boys’ basketball in the Lambton Kent Elementary Schools’ Athletic Association.

The Eagles beat the Tecumseh Timberwolves 48-36 in the girls’ final and defeated the Winston Churchill Bulldogs 60-31 in the boys’ final Wednesday at John McGregor Secondary School.

In the girls’ final, Aaliyah Isaac led McNaughton with 24 points, Cassandra Newcombe scored nine, Regan Vlasschaert had eight and Victoria Newcombe added six.

Leah Day scored 20 for Tecumseh, Jocelyn Stokes added nine and Emily Stokes had six.

McNaughton led 7-6, 20-13 and 29-26 at the quarters.

In the boys’ final, Caleb Roberts scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter. Ryder Polowick added 17, Brady Kay had nine and Carter Nicholson had six as McNaughton won its third straight title.

Jordan Parker scored 10 for Churchill, Daniel Norton had nine and Joseph Reimer added five.

McNaughton led 25-8, 39-20 and 50-25 at the quarters.

Ex-Maroons win AUS crown

Former Chatham Maroons forwards James McEwan and Patrick Watling won the Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey championship with the University of New Brunswick Reds.

McEwan had two assists in two games as the Reds swept the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in the conference final.

The Chatham native had three goals and three assists in 12 games in the regular season. He joined the Reds this season after playing four seasons in the OHL.

Watling had four points in 14 regular-season games. He returned to school after playing three pro seasons in the ECHL and AHL.

UNB and St. FX have qualified for the University Cup national championship to be played March 14-17 in Lethbridge, Alta.

Ex-Maroons forward Sam Studnicka plays for the X-Men.
