Alaska Airlines to fly nonstop between San Diego and Spokane

Alaska Airlines, which continues to expand service out of San Diego’s Lindbergh Field, will start flying nonstop to Spokane, Wash., this October, the company announced Thursday.

Beginning Oct. 1, the new flight will be the only nonstop flight offered between the two cities.

“We’re excited to add another connection between the Pacific Northwest and California with our new nonstop service between Spokane and San Diego, one of our key focus cities for growth,” said John Kirby, vice president of capacity planning at Alaska Airlines. “Alaska continues to emphasize our commitment to continued growth and investment throughout the West Coast.”

Last year, Southwest Airlines added seasonal service to Spokane during the summer months but the flights did not resume this summer. However, Southwest said it will offer Sunday-only nonstop service to Spokane this September only. It is possible the service it could resume in the fall of 2019.

The new flight will depart daily from San Diego at 5:40 p.m. and arrive in Spokane at 8:25 p.m. The return flight will leave Spokane at 7:10 a.m. and arrive at 9:55 a.m.

Although Alaska trails Southwest in the number of flights coming through San Diego International Airport, it still has a robust presence, expecting to average 46 daily departures to 28 destinations from San Diego, including the most nonstop flights to Mexico and Hawaii.

The Alaska Airlines flight will use Embraer 175 jets, which feature a three-class cabin. On this particular aircraft, every seat is along a window or the aisle, with no middle seats.

Tickets went on sale Thursday, and a search of Alaska Airlines’ website shows one-way tickets for as low as $118.

San Diego airport officials welcomed news of the additional route.

“The economic benefit from adding new routes to San Diego simply can’t be overstated,” said airport CEO Kim Becker. “Bringing more people to the region means there are more people spending and investing money here. That helps create jobs and support jobs we already have.”
