The prize at LIV Golf Adelaide this week is almost three times bigger than the purse on offer at the PGA Tour's Zurich Classic in New Orleans.

The Zurich Classic has become a staple of the PGA Tour in recent years, and boasts a different format to the usual weekly offering on the American-based circuit. The tournament is a team-based event, with those competing playing in pairs across two different formats.

Rounds one and three at TPC Louisiana follow a fourball format where players from each duo play their own ball, before better ball comes into account to decide the score of each pair on each hole.

Rounds two and four then adopts foursomes, which sees players from each pair play alternate shots with just the one ball. A whole host of marque names have teamed up with each other to compete in New Orleans, most notably Rory McIlroy and his Olympic partner Shane Lowry.

Elsewhere tournament favourites Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are paired together having enjoyed previous success at the Zurich. The American Ryder Cup duo won the team event back in 2022, before following up with an impressive top-five finish in their title defence 12 months ago.

There is plenty of brotherly representation in the field too, with 2022 U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick joined by his younger brother Alex, whilst Danish twins Nicolai and Ramsus Hojgaard are also alongside each other. In total, a prize pool of £7.1 million is on offer to those competing.

The winning pair will take home just over £1 million each for getting their hands on the title come Sunday evening. Despite its mainstay on the PGA Tour calendar, the Zurich Classic did not receive the Signature Event status handed out by the American-based circuit, meaning it missed out on one of the lucrative £16 million purses.

The elevated prize pots on the PGA Tour came in response to the rise of their LIV Golf rivals, who are once again in action this week. The breakaway circuit makes its eagerly-anticipated return to the Grange this week for LIV Adelaide, after the Aussie-based event made of plenty of noise on debut in 2023.

Over in Adelaide a whopping £20 million is on offer to those competing, with £16 million handed out across the individual side of the tournament, whilst £4 million is split across the top-three teams after 54 holes. As always the winner of a LIV event will take away a cool £3.2 million in earnings for their efforts across the three days.

One man looking forward to the week ahead is LIV's CEO - and Aussie native - Greg Norman, who will no doubt be hoping to build on the momentum the Adelaide event created in 2023. Speaking of the importance to bring LIV to his home country, Norman said on Wednesday: "That was one of my initiatives when I was asked to come on board as CEO and commissioner of LIV.

"I knew the value of Australia, what Australia can represent to the game of golf and what Australia lacked, and the Premier hit the nail on the head. Basically the fans spoke in droves last year. They continue to speak this year."
